»Eva has a name related to the beginning of a world; her world – the one of sensuality, mystery, love and light, sometimes a world of restlesness comprised of so many elements that she feels to be surrounded by shadows. Fleeting shadows…« wrote Lucien Clergue, the legendary French photographer, the founder of the Rencontres, the oldest photography festival in Arles, France, as a prologue into the last book he edited before his death in 2014: Eva Petrič TRANSapPARENT.
Eva Petrič, the multimedia artist working and living in between New York City and Vienna, Austria, and originally from Slovenia, was Clergue's last student. Under his mentorship she created a 1015 page book of the artist Gray matter – language of shadows. Out of this book stem the series of her Gray matter images that are currently in the contemporary collection of the Gallery Mourlot.
For one of these images, Ophelia no 2, she was awarded with the silver medal for photography at the 2016 Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris, France, one of the world's oldest art salons organized by the French Societe National des beaux Arts, SNBA. »Eva’s creative spectrum reveals no determinant meaning or singular reading. The appeal of her artistic themes and digressions are precisely rooted in the permanent flow ofsurprising detours, in which an allegorical approach obviates a strict liner interpretation,« wrote Boris Podrecca, the well known European Architect based in Vienna, where he frequently took part at many of Eva Petric's exhibitions and site specific installations.
Petrič is the recipient of numerous awards and her list contains over 40 solo exhibitions around the world. Twice, in 2013 and2015, she was among the few nominated artists to represent Slovenia at the Venice Art Biennale. The Italian art critic, curator and art historian Martina Corgnati wrote on herphotography work: »Eva Petric's images capture the shadow, and its speculative ways, its encounters, its multiplications, its finely stratified appearances but not only this: often, in the ambiguous depth of range, one can catch the presence of something else, a glimmer or an additional image layed on a diaphragm, glass, or mirror, that hints of another plane internal to the one of photography itself.
The glance is lost, the reality is diluting, there appears a thin, immaterial thread of impressions that are feeble but of perceptive elegance….«
