Galerie Mourlot is pleased
to present "Portraits", an exhibition of paintings and works on paper
by Anthony Fisher.
Since 2008, Anthony Fisher
has concentrated his graphic and painterly efforts on the human head. His new
portraits bear physical and emotive scars involved with the technique and
cathartic discovery involved in creating vivid sensations in paint. Artistic
concerns drive Fisher to incessantly think, rethink, draw, paint and repaint
the organic machinery that makes us all human.
The impulsiveness of
Anthony Fisher’s brushstrokes masks an art making process that involves careful
study from a still-life set up, a series of preliminary sketches, and a
rigorous and anxious process of building up, scraping off and moving around
mounds of oil paint.
Anthony Fisher’s small
studies and sizeable painted portraits are the product of a restive vision. His
most recent notebooks contain acrylic and crayon studies in which he explores
variations of heads, ears, lips, and noses which inevitably influence the
countenance of his newest ‘Head’ paintings. Works on paper such as those which
further elongate and stylize Ira’s thin ovoid head are more than just exercises
between larger portraits. They are themselves finished compositions and are
testaments to the artist’s need for intimacy with his chosen subject—one that
necessitates constant refinement.
